The first marine heme iron

Discover SalmoFer® – a breakthrough innovation offering a high-quality heme iron extracted from Atlantic salmon, providing an effective and naturally bioavailable solution to combat iron deficiency.

Thanks to its unique extraction process, SalmoFer® delivers a premium product tailored to modern nutritional needs.

SalmoFer® – The first marine-derived heme iron

SalmoFer® is the world’s first heme iron sourced from Atlantic salmon. Raised in the pristine Norwegian fjords, this salmon reflects the expertise of Lerøy Seafood Group, a pioneer in seafood since 1899. Through its 100% Fish division, Lerøy Seafood transforms high-quality marine resources into premium health ingredients.

SalmoFer® represents a new generation of iron supplements: more effective, better tolerated, and 100% natural.

Its gentle extraction process, free from additives and chemical treatments, preserves the natural structure of heme iron — identical to that found in human blood and muscle tissue. The result: superior bioavailability compared to traditional iron salts, with optimal digestive tolerance.

SalmoFer® fully meets growing consumer and brand expectations for iron that is effective, sustainably sourced, safe, and fully traceable.

Certified quality, traceability, and sustainability with SalmoFer®

What is heme iron?

Heme iron is a natural form of iron found in animal products like salmon. It is bound to a molecule called heme, which plays a crucial role in oxygen transport in blood and muscles. This structure allows heme iron to be directly absorbed and used by the body without needing conversion.

By contrast, non-heme iron — found in plant-based foods — must first be converted by the body before it can be utilized, a process influenced by other dietary components.

Heme iron is therefore more efficiently absorbed and better tolerated, offering an effective solution to prevent and treat iron deficiency — without the digestive side effects commonly associated with other forms of iron.

3 things to know about heme iron

It’s the most bioavailable form of iron

Heme iron is naturally found in hemoglobin (blood) and myoglobin (muscles). It is absorbed 2 to 3 times better than non-heme iron, with bioavailability reaching up to 35%.

It’s ideal for at-risk populations

Thanks to its high bioavailability and excellent tolerance, heme iron is particularly suitable for pregnant women, adolescents, athletes, and people with anemia.

It’s gentle on the digestive system

Unlike many synthetic iron forms, heme iron is well tolerated and typically does not cause nausea or constipation, even at effective doses.

Iron deficiency: a global public health challenge

Iron deficiency remains one of the most widespread nutritional issues globally, affecting a significant proportion of the world’s population:
