Algamo is the only European producer of organic astaxanthin, extracted from Haematococcus pluvialis microalgae. Produced in a sustainable and environmentally responsible facility located in the heart of a protected national park in the Czech Republic, this astaxanthin offers outstanding antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
The production company Algamo, founded in 2011, specializes in the cultivation of natural astaxanthin extracted from the Haematococcus pluvialis algae. Algamo, the only producer of organic astaxanthin in Central Europe, chose a mountainous location, ideal for the ecological production of premium-quality, 100% pure astaxanthin.
The production plant is based at the foot of the Krkonoše mountains in the Czech Republic, north-east of Prague. The facility benefits from its own underground mountain water source and uses green energy and renewable heat from a nearby environmentally-friendly biomass power plant. Algamo’s astaxanthin has a truly low environmental footprint
The cutting-edge technology used to produce astaxanthin is based on the cultivation of algae in a fully controlled environment, using closed photobioreactors. This innovation guarantees total control of the entire process, with rigorous controls at every stage of production, enabling high quality standards to be maintained throughout the cycle.
The entire production process is entirely controlled by Algamo. It is important to note that this is a supercritical extraction (high quality solvent-free extraction, guaranteeing perfect preservation of the active ingredients).
The green microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis, from which Algamo’s astaxanthin is extracted, is organically cultivated.
Astaxanthin is a powerful natural pink or reddish pigment belonging to the carotenoid family (in the same way as beta-carotene, lycopene, lutein and zeaxanthin).
Carotenoids are a large family of plant pigments recognized for their properties in the plant world. In general, they help protect plants against UV radiation, and play a part in photosynthesis by absorbing and transmitting light rays.
Carotenoids give fruits, vegetables, algae and flowers a color ranging from red to yellow, orange and green.
In addition to their ability to pigment our food, carotenoids are powerful antioxidants and provide numerous benefits to our bodies.
Astaxanthin is considered one of the most powerful natural antioxidants, with significant anti-inflammatory properties. Most of the body’s problems are caused by oxidative stress (free radicals) or chronic inflammation.
The remarkable antioxidant effects of astaxanthin are linked to its unique molecular structure, which allows solubility in both water and fats. The molecule penetrates cell walls (and can also act in the brain and eyes). Unlike many powerful antioxidants (vitamin E, β-Carotene, Zeaxanthin, etc.), which can in certain circumstances become pro-oxidants, this is not the case with astaxanthin.
Astaxanthin extracted from Haematococcus pluvialis microalgae has been approved as a Novel Food for use in dietary supplements. It is also widely used in cosmetics and pharmaceutical applications.
