Aker BioMarine

Premium krill

Since its creation, Seanova has been committed to offering krill oil, convinced of its positive effects on health and well-being.

Seanova and Aker BioMarine formalized their partnership in 2023, with the signing of an exclusivity contract.

Aker BioMarine, the world's most sustainable krill fishery

Specializing in krill, Aker BioMarine uses an ecological krill harvesting technology (Eco-Harvesting®) that maintains the nutritional integrity of these crustaceans and minimizes their environmental impact. It is the only krill supplier to control the entire supply chain, from krill harvesting to the production of finished products.

Aker BioMarine’s fishing boats are purpose-built for krill fishing and record the fishing area of each batch of krill, thanks to the sophisticated GPS system on board.

Aker BioMarine krill oil is fully traceable back to its origin in Antarctica. This means that when you buy Aker BioMarine krill oil, you can rest assured that we know exactly where each reference comes from.

Aker BioMarine for best practices

Aker BioMarine works closely with regulatory and environmental authorities and stakeholders such as the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR), the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) and the World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF-Norway).

Krill oil is certified sustainable by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC). The krill fishery has been rated “A” for the past four years by the SFP (Substainable Fisheries Partnership).

Convinced of the importance of sharing best practices and promoting industry responsibility, Aker BioMarine co-founded the Association of Responsible Krill Harvesting Companies (ARK) in 2010. This industry association was created to promote research intoon sustainable harvesting of Antarctic krill and to generate scientific data on krill fishing.

Aker BioMarine offers high-quality krill-derived ingredients with a high content of active ingredients: long-chain omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA), phospholipids, choline and astaxanthin, all of which are beneficial to health.

What is krill?

The name comes from the Norwegian word krill, meaning “small fish fry”.

Krill is a small, shrimp-like marine crustacean, averaging 3.5 cm in length. It contains long-chain omega-3 fatty acids: eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), phospholipids, choline and astaxanthin.

Krill feed on microscopic algae. It is one of the largest biomasses on our planet. Present in all oceans, they play an essential role in the marine food chain.

There are 85 different species in all the world’s oceans, but six of them live in the Antarctic Ocean. The largest species of krill, Euphasia Superba, is harvested because of its size and the fact that it gathers in large schools, called swarms, in the Southern Ocean.

4 things to know about krill

Krill can grow and shrink multiple times throughout their lives.

During their life cycle, krill go through periods of intense feeding and starvation, depending on the season and the availability of food. This phenomenon is repeated several times during their lives, which explains why they continually grow and shrink. To adapt to this change in size, krill shed their carapace every 13 to 20 days to make room for their extra body or to fit into their smaller suit! It is therefore impossible to determine the age of a krill based on its body size.

Krill swarms can even be seen from space!

Although no bigger than the average paperclip, Antarctic krill can be seen from space! The huge swarms that gather in the Southern Ocean are so dense that they have been observed from space. When they're close to the water's surface, they even give it a pinkish-red tinge.

Krill dive deep to reproduce and rise to feed

To reproduce, krill dive to depths of 3,000 meters to lay their eggs. Female krill can lay up to 10,000 eggs a day! The larvae hatch and slowly rise to the surface.

Krill oil has no fishy aftertaste

Krill contains omega-3s bound to phospholipids. These phospholipids enable krill oil to mix well with food and gastric juices.
