Aker BioMarine works closely with regulatory and environmental authorities and stakeholders such as the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR), the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) and the World Wildlife Fund for Nature (WWF-Norway).
Krill oil is certified sustainable by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC). The krill fishery has been rated “A” for the past four years by the SFP (Substainable Fisheries Partnership).
Convinced of the importance of sharing best practices and promoting industry responsibility, Aker BioMarine co-founded the Association of Responsible Krill Harvesting Companies (ARK) in 2010. This industry association was created to promote research intoon sustainable harvesting of Antarctic krill and to generate scientific data on krill fishing.

Krill is a small, shrimp-like marine crustacean, averaging 3.5 cm in length. It contains long-chain omega-3 fatty acids: eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), phospholipids, choline and astaxanthin.
Krill feed on microscopic algae. It is one of the largest biomasses on our planet. Present in all oceans, they play an essential role in the marine food chain.
There are 85 different species in all the world’s oceans, but six of them live in the Antarctic Ocean. The largest species of krill, Euphasia Superba, is harvested because of its size and the fact that it gathers in large schools, called swarms, in the Southern Ocean.
